Losing a dental filling might feel like a big deal, especially if it catches you off guard during a meal or while brushing. But don’t panic! Fillings can fall out for all sorts of reasons, and there are steps you can take right away to protect your tooth and avoid further damage. Here’s what to do if your filling decides to make a break for it.

Stay Calm and Find the Filling

If you feel something hard in your mouth while eating or brushing, don’t swallow it! Carefully spit it out and check if it’s a filling. If it is, carefully store it in a small container. You might also notice sensitivity, a sharp edge, or even a visible hole where the filling used to be.

Rinse and Clean the Area

Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water to remove any food particles and help reduce the risk of infection. Avoid scrubbing the area or poking at it with your tongue as this can make things worse!

Avoid Chewing on the Tooth

Until your dentist can see you, avoid anything that could irritate or further damage your tooth. That means no chewing gum, crunchy snacks, or hot beverages. Stick to soft foods and chew on the opposite side of your mouth if possible.

Use Some Temporary Protection

Over-the-counter dental repair kits (available at most drugstores) contain temporary filling materials that can help seal the hole until your appointment. Just follow the instructions on the label carefully. In a pinch, sugar-free gum or orthodontic wax may offer short-term relief.

Call Your Dentist

A lost filling won’t fix itself, and the longer you wait, the greater risk you run of developing pain, infection, or further damage. Call your dentist as soon as possible so they can assess the tooth and schedule a replacement.

Even though a lost filling may not hurt at first, exposed areas of the tooth are much more sensitive and vulnerable. Receiving care quickly can prevent bigger (and more expensive) problems like decay, fractures, or even the need for a root canal down the line.
